School of Infrastructure, IIT Bhubaneswar organized a five-day training  program on "Survey, Investigation, and Preparation of DPR for Bridges in  Rural Roads" from September 9 to 13, 2024. The program emphasized the  importance of data-driven research, geotechnical investigation, and  safe, resilient bridge design. Hosted by the School of Infrastructure at  IIT Bhubaneswar, the event aimed to provide comprehensive knowledge on  bridge construction.
The inauguration was led by Er. Ashok Kumar  Basa, a distinguished bridge engineer from Odisha, former President of  the Institution of Engineers India (IEI), and currently the Executive  Vice President of the World Federation of Engineering Organizations  (WFEO). Other notable attendees included Shri Aswani Kumar Padhi, Senior  Bridge Engineer from SMEC India; Prof. V. Panduranga, Dean of  Continuing Education at IIT Bhubaneswar; and Prof. Sumanta Haldar, Head  of the School of Infrastructure. The course was coordinated by Dr.  Suresh R. Dash and Dr. Umesh Chandra Sahoo, both from the School of  Infrastructure.
More than 40 delegates from across India,  specializing in bridge analysis, design, and construction, participated.  The training was financially supported by the National Rural  Infrastructure Development Agency (NRIDA), Government of India.
Throughout  the five days, the course covered essential topics such as bridge  planning, DPR preparation, soil investigation, hydraulic design, load  assessment, and the design of superstructures, substructures, and  foundations with seismic considerations. Advanced subjects, including  lightweight bridge design and bridge health monitoring, were also  explored. Hands-on exercises and a field visit to an under-construction  bridge site provided practical insights to the participants.
